Managing Your Prompts
Prompts are the queries you track to monitor your AI search visibility. Managing your prompts effectively is crucial for understanding how AI models respond to questions about your industry, products, or services.
What Are Prompts?
Prompts are questions or search queries that people might ask AI assistants. For example:
- “What is the best project management tool for remote teams?”
- “How do I optimize content for AI search engines?”
- “Compare Notion vs. Asana for task management”
When you add a prompt to ClayHog, we monitor how different AI models respond and track whether your brand or content gets mentioned.
Adding Prompts
There are three ways to add prompts to your account:
1. Add Manually
Click “Add Prompt” and enter your query. This gives you full control over exactly what you want to track.

Queries that explicitly mention your brand name.

Competitor Comparison
Queries that compare your brand with competitors.
Example: “ClayHog vs. Semrush for AI search tracking”

Prompt Best Practices
1. Start with Core Topics
Begin by tracking prompts around your main products, services, and value propositions.
2. Cover the Buyer Journey
Include prompts for different stages:
- Awareness: “What is [problem]?”
- Consideration: “How to solve [problem]?”
- Decision: “Best [solution] for [use case]?“
3. Include Competitor Comparisons
Track prompts that compare you with major competitors to understand your relative positioning.
4. Use Natural Language
Write prompts the way real people would ask questions. AI assistants respond best to conversational queries.
5. Monitor and Adjust
Review prompt performance regularly. Remove prompts that don’t provide value and add new ones based on trending topics in your industry.
6. Balance Volume and Quality
Start with 10-20 high-quality prompts rather than hundreds of mediocre ones. You can always expand later.
Understanding Prompt Metrics
Each prompt shows key metrics:
- Visibility: Percentage of responses mentioning your brand
- Responses: Total number of AI responses collected
- Sentiment: Average sentiment across all responses
- Brands: Which brands appear in responses (you and competitors)
What Happens When You Add a Prompt?
When you add a new prompt, ClayHog:
- Sends the prompt to multiple AI models
- Collects and analyzes the responses
- Identifies brand mentions and citations
- Calculates sentiment scores
- Updates your dashboard metrics
This process typically takes a few minutes. You’ll see a “Generating…” status while responses are being collected.
