Adding and Managing Prompts

Prompts are the foundation of your GEO tracking strategy. This guide will show you how to effectively add and manage prompts in ClayHog.

What Are Prompts?

Prompts are the questions or queries that users ask AI search engines. By tracking relevant prompts, you can understand how often your content is being cited in AI responses.

Adding a Prompt

  1. Navigate to the Prompts section in your dashboard
  2. Click Add New Prompt
  3. Enter your prompt text
  4. Select the AI models you want to track (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews)

    Note: Model-specific tracking is coming soon. Currently, all models are tracked automatically.

  5. Choose tracking frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly)

    Note: This is coming soon feature

  6. Click Save

Prompt Best Practices

Be Specific

Good prompt:

“What are the best enterprise CMS platforms for e-commerce in 2024?”

Too broad:

“CMS platforms”

Match User Intent

Think about how your target audience actually asks questions. Use natural language and consider different phrasings of the same question.

Organize by Category

Group related prompts into categories for easier analysis:

  • Product queries: Questions about your products or services
  • How-to guides: Instructional queries
  • Comparison queries: “X vs Y” type questions
  • Problem-solving: Questions about specific pain points

Prompt Variations

Track multiple variations of the same question to get comprehensive data:

  • “Best project management software for remote teams”
  • “Top project management tools for distributed teams”
  • “Project management apps for remote work”

Managing Your Prompts

Pause Prompts

Temporarily stop tracking a prompt without losing historical data:

  • Click the actions menu (three dots) next to any prompt
  • Select Pause Prompt
  • Historical data is preserved and can be viewed anytime
  • Resume tracking whenever you need

Note: Editing and deleting prompts is coming soon. For now, you can pause prompts you no longer want to actively track.

Bulk Import

Have a large list of prompts you want to track? Bulk import is coming soon to help you add multiple prompts at once.

How it will work:

  1. Download the CSV template
  2. Fill in your prompts
  3. Upload the file
  4. Review and confirm

Note: Bulk import will be available on Professional and Enterprise plans when released.
